About Us

At Preti Flaherty, the firm is proud to partner with their clients to create opportunity. With more than 100 attorneys practicing across many areas of law, the firm has the foresight and strategic intelligence to work toward outcomes that are not simply expeditious, but which support its clients’ long-term goals and innovative ideas. The firm’s attorneys work from its lean but strategically placed footprint across the Northeast, with offices from Maine to Washington, DC, and the firm has a diverse record of success.

Main Areas of Practice:

Business:

Preti Flaherty advises clients in every stage of business development, including business formation, securities offerings, technology protection and venture capital financing. The firm can also adroitly counsel clients on technology licensing, executive compensation, debt financing and counseling boards. Those businesses that find themselves poised to move into the regional, national or global level also turn to Preti Flaherty for counsel on mergers and acquisitions, franchising, joint ventures and strategic alliances, international transactions, commercial contracts and tax planning.

Real Estate:

Preti Flaherty represents buyers, sellers, lenders and developers on a broad range of complex commercial real estate matters. From negotiating acquisitions, easements, land use issues and commercial leases to securing tax exempt and tax increment financing, the firm is involved with some of northern New England’s largest and most complex real estate and land use projects.

Energy & Telecommunications:

Preti Flaherty is a national leader in the rapidly evolving US-Canada energy marketplace. The firm counsels industrial consumers, energy project developers, energy cooperatives and aggregators, and others on the reduction of risk and cost through deregulation.

The firm provides counsel on rate reductions, special rate contracts, cost of service, rate structures, customer relations and competitive relationships with, from and among utilities, energy suppliers and customers. Preti attorneys also assist in the structuring of entities to finance, build, license and operate renewable and natural gas powerplants and large and small transmission lines.

Environmental:

Preti Flaherty has one of the region’s largest and most diverse environmental practices. The firm’s environmental litigators, transactional attorneys and regulatory specialists advise clients on legal issues related to all aspects of environmental regulation, compliance and due diligence, including air and water pollution, hazardous waste, chemical regulation and land use controls. The firm offers in-depth experience in all phases of federal, state and local administrative and civil judicial enforcement proceedings.

Health:

Preti Flaherty counsels hospitals, nursing homes, home health agencies, rehabilitation centers and other health care facilities, as well as insurers and individual practitioners. The firm has encompassing experience dealing with emerging health care issues and their legal ramifications and works hard to adjust regulations and advance laws and interpretations in support of its clients’ interests. Preti Flaherty provides extensive services to institutions facing increasingly complex state regulatory issues. It has represented hospitals at hearings and proceedings before the Department of Human Services and the Federal Provider Reimbursement Review Board.

Intellectual Property:

The firm works with clients to develop creative and cost-effective strategies for securing, maintaining, exploiting, and enforcing a company’s intellectual property assets and has significant experience in technical fields and represents clients with IP matters, including patents, trademarks and copyrights, dispute resolution, trade secrets, unfair competition, licensing, M&A, entertainment, multimedia and software law.

Employment Law:

Preti Flaherty helps businesses, both in non-union and unionized settings, avoid potentially damaging situations by developing, implementing and communicating sound workplace policies and strategies. In addition to the counseling and risk prevention work the group provides, it also has extensive experience litigating claims in state and federal courts, representing management in National Labor Relations Board proceedings and arbitrations under collective bargaining agreements, and defending charges of discrimination before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the Maine Human Rights Commission.

The firm’s inside knowledge of public policy and the legislative process, combined with legal skills both traditional and groundbreaking, combine to create a wide range of approaches to resolving issues and influencing legislation. Many of the firm’s attorneys have actively participated in the legislative process at both state and federal levels.
